Karen Messenger's Story

Graduated from OWJC in 1969, University of West Florida in 1974 with a BA in Elementary Ed. After teaching for 7 years, working as a Social Worker for the State of Washington for 16 years and doing lots of music "on the side," especially in the church the past 30 years, I went back to school in my fifties. In 2008 I graduated from Seattle University with a Master of Divinity and a Post Master's Certificate in Spiritual Direction. I served as Pastor of the United Methodist Church in Oroville, WA, for 4 years a tiny town near the Canadian border. We then moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to serve the United Methodist Church there for 2 years. We moved to serve the United Methodist church in Yelm, WA, a lot closer to our home and family on the Coast of Washington. At the end of June, I retir...Expand for more
ed to return to our home in Hoquiam and family in Grays Harbor County so that we could be closer to my parents, who need more support at this time in their lives. I still serve part-time at the Aberdeen First United Methodist Church, and continue to do music ministry and serve as pastor or chaplain in various volunteer settings. I have been married to Bill Davison for 31 years this past August. Between us we have three children, ten grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Bill has been learning -- or rather creating -- his role as the Pastor's "wife," and "Special Assistant to the Pastor." He thought that was over when I "retired." Surprise! We are still getting settled in our new/old home, shared by my youngest sister Peggy and her daughter Shana. Life is different, but still good.

It seems like many out there today are trying to convince us that we can and should make it on our own, to trust or confide in no one. While it is true that we need to use common sense about who we trust, I believe that God
